the roots
“The Roots” are young adults aged between 15 and 22. They are all from extremely poor communities around Kolkata, but have demonstrated a desire and work ethic to improve themselves and their families lives by working hard and excelling in their education. Via this scheme they have the opportunity to gain a better life that can lift their families and themselves out of the slums and the misery of life. For most of the girls, this is also often a way out of arranged marriages and into a life that they have control over.
Over the years, Marina, our Head Director, has encouraged and helped these children grow into young adults fulfilling their own personal ambitions. Marina has guided them, emotionally and financially.
At The Blue Turtle Centre, we have continued Marina’s wonderful and generous support for these young adults by paying either for their tuition, their admission or monthly fees. Some colleges and universities are relatively affordable and cost around 120 euros per year. Other prestigious universities, which promise a job after graduation, need a budget of up to 700 euros per year. In return for our financial support, they help out at The Blue Turtle Centre, teaching the youngest ones under Marina’s supervision. These young adults, known as “The Roots”, are a perfect model and daily inspiration for our younger students. The first ones have now received their diploma of engineer, lawyer, nurse…
